Lava Lamps Care and Use
Make sure your lamp is at room temperature before using. This may take several hours or a couple days depending on shipping conditions.
Your Lava brand motion lamp has polarized plug (one plug is wider than the other). As a safety feature, this plug will only fit in a polarized outlet one way. If the plug does not fit fully in the outlet, reverse the plug. Never use with an extension cord unless the plug can be fully inserted. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO DEFEAT THIS SAFETY FEATURE.
Your lamp operates at a very warm temperature. The glass globe and base will become HOT. Do not handle while in operation.
Do not loosen or remove cap on globe.
Don’t move or shake your lamp while the blobs are warm. This will cause your lamp to become cloudy and permanently malfunction.
Operation or storage of a lamp in direct sunlight will cause colors to fade.
Each Lava brand motion lamp has its own personality. No two lamps will function exactly the same way.
Never operate your lamp for more than 10 hours at a time. This will insure proper operation and long globe life.
Keep the lamp at room temperature. The lamps work best between 70-74 degrees.
Keep out of children’s reach.
Initial warm up takes 5-6 hours. Full lava flow is achieved after the lamp has been used 5-6 times.
Your lava liquid may appear cloudy at first. This will clear up with continued use.
Be Kind to your lamp.
During initial warm-up of your Lava brand motion lamp, the coil in the globe may tend to stand on end or float to the top of the globe. If this happens, keep your lamp operating for 4 hours or more to allow the lava material to become completely molten. The coil should then automatically drop to its correct position at the bottom of the globe. If the coil does not drop down, twirl the globe gently in the base and the coil will slide down.
Keep in mind that this chart is based on the fact that you have allowed your lamp sufficient time for initial warm-up.
Cloudiness is very common with new lamps, especially the smaller sizes and the lamps with clear liquids. Cloudiness is caused when small particles of wax soften and break off and remain suspended in the solution. This will clear up with continued use. Here is what Lava World recommends:
Turn the lamp on only long enough for the wax to mound up and glow. Don’t allow it to send up the tentacles or allow blobs to form.
Here are the suggested heat up times:
Grandes and 52 ounce lamps 1 hour
32 and 20 ounce lamps 30 minutes
8 ounce lamps 15 minutes
Keep in mind, these times are for a brand new, never used lamp. If the lamp has been used and the globe has been heated, the times will be considerably less.
Once it has run for this short period, totally shut it off. Allow it to totally cool. What you are trying to achieve is to heat the liquid, not the wax. Since cold wax
is denser than the hot liquid, the wax droplets that are suspended will eventually drop out of the solution. Slowly. It won’t happen overnight. If the warm up cycle runs too long and you have lava movement, shut it down, cool it completely and start over tomorrow.
Every lava lamp is different and has its own personality. They are like a fine wine, they get better with age. The times given are just general. Your lamp may take more or less time. It may take 1-3 weeks for the lamp to clear up.
